Valvectomy Natural Horns

These “valvectomy” natural horns are a great way to start one’s journey into the natural horn and to gain a greater understanding of how our instrument functions. They come from vintage Single F horns and have their valves removed. The dimensions of the horn are close enough to one’s modern instrument to not play exceedingly different. Removing the valves is the first step to working with the natural harmonic series and the use of the right hand in the bell. Since these come from old single F horns that oftentimes didn’t have a great life, expect them to have dents, blemishes, etc. Making them valvectomies gives them a new life, but the only way to keep costs down is to do minimal work to make it play well, but not look well.

Prices vary based on keys desired, most common is F, E, Eb and D for $600.

Why Natural Horn?

The benefits of natural horn study are numerous. Pedagogically, learning style, technique, a better sense of intonation, strengthened endurance, greater use of airflow, etc. We hope that by providing affordable natural horn options like this one, soon every university will have the opportunity to use natural horns in their study, as most of the literature we perform is either written for the instrument, or is heavily influenced by it.
