A wonderful late 19th century (~1870-1890) Besson natural horn with a full set of crooks from C alto to Bb basso. We spoke with natural horn expert Tony Halstead in the U.K. and he confirmed the crook set was made by Paxman in the 1980’s.
In amazing condition for being over 130 years old! Plays great, nicely at A=440 except for C alto which prefers A=430. Takes a zero Morse shank mouthpiece.
There is evidence of this horn originally having pistons. This design of horn in France and England had a natural horn design for the corpus, with or without pistons added depending on what the player preferred. It’s unclear when the pistons were removed but the horn likely played better without them anyway!
Comes with a custom made case that can fit all of the crooks.
