19th century single Bb horns are very rare to find as it wasn’t a preferred instrument for most players. One of the major players that took up the single Bb was Franz Strauss, father of composer Richard Strauss and principal horn under Wagner.

This single Bb, likely made around 1880, is in wonderful condition for its age! Dr. James Hampson has performed the Richard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 on it as a guest artist at Ohio University. For a ~140 year old instrument the rotors are in nice shape. A couple patches but very well done. It’s a very mellow, nimble instrument, great for playing the 1st and 3rd romantic horn parts, and wonderful for chamber music.

No maker, anonymous, but of German make. Nice garland. Takes a narrow shank mouthpiece. Natural horn mouthpieces play very well on it.

Part of the Hampson Horns Collection.
